01. What is the Difference between Private and Public Post Secondary Institutions?

Canada is well-known for its high-quality post-secondary educational system. Canada offers post-secondary education in either Private or Public (Community) Colleges.

The big difference between Private and Public Colleges is that Public Colleges are primarily funded by the federal and their respective provincial government of Canada. Meanwhile, Private Colleges do not receive any funding from the federal or provincial governments.

Public Colleges are usually a more affordable option for local citizens compared to Private Colleges due to being subsidized by the government. However, for International Students, the tuition fee may not vary much. In some cases, a Private College may be cheaper than a Public College.

Many Private Colleges offer similar programs to Public Colleges but in a shorter period without compromising the quality of education. This approach may benefit you, as you achieve your educational goal faster which can save you time.

Public Colleges usually have a larger range of courses to offer and are known to have larger class sizes. Courses offered by Private Colleges generally are often market-driven programs and have smaller class sizes. The smaller small class sizes result in increased interaction between the instructors and students. This will result in a more qualitative approach and individual students will receive the attention that they require.

For International Students only, IRCC only approves certain Private Colleges as Designated Learning institutions (DLI), which is a requirement to attain a Study Permit. Some Private Colleges may not be recognized as DLI. Each DLI Has a DLI Number that begins with a letter “O” then followed by 11 digits. You can always check which Private College are a Designated Learning Institution through the IRCC DLI Page (Designated learning institutions list - Canada.ca).
